Napoleon's Religion reforms.

Failures of the Concordat?

  • Deterioration of relations between Napoleon and the Pope over time.
  • Private church schools increased in popularity.

concordat was sign on the 15 July 1801:

•The separation of the church and the state, which the revolution had tried so hard to end.

•The Catholic Church recognised the revolution and makes no attempts to recover church land.

•A state controlled church was established and its clergymen paid as civil servants, appointed by the government bound by oath.

•Catholic worship would be freely recognised in France and it would be toleration to other faiths.

  • Meant that everyone equal because the church no longer had the privilege of the first.
  • The Church accept the revolution, therefore help the revolution move forward.
  • People could worship freely.
  • Separation of the Church and the state, same time increasing state control.

Napoleon knew that there was a divided between Religion and the state. Napoleon wanted to restored relations between the two though rapprochement. Napoleons own attitude to religion was ambivalent. Napoleon liked the idea that would act a social bond. He thought it would help clergymen and bring social

The concordat was published in April 1802 with a wide range of ecclesiastical laws (of relation to Christian church), which he called the ‘organic articles’. The ‘organic articles’, was a series of articles limiting the Pope control over French bishops, while also increasing state control over the clergy.

The Church was no longer the privilege First estate and there was very little chance of it being restored.

Concordat meant that in theory people would be more unity, therefore France work more efficient and there are less rebels because people are happy with their situation.

Did it help Napoleon maintain control ?

The concordat meant that Napoleon had control over the french people because of the influences that religion had over people in France. It meant the divided between the clergy and the french people where closed. Napoleon had social control over people day to day lives.
