Connor Nelson:

Student today, Teacher tomorrow

My Goals

  • To share my mathematical knowledge with students in fun and meaningful ways.

  • Inspire students to continue their pursuit of STEM education and knowledge.

  • Be a positive role model in the schools and their communities.

My Work in Schools

  • I began working in Cedar Park Middle School when I was a sophomore in high school, when I was hired to work at an after-school homework club program. I worked with individuals and small groups of students who struggled in their Spanish, Math, and Science classes.

  • I returned to Cedar Park when I was a Senior in college to work as an Instructional Assistant to provide extra support for overcrowded 8th-grade math classrooms enrolled with up to forty students. Typically I taught the same lessons as the teachers, but to portion of their students. Other times I worked with students that were behind in their learning targets.

College and Tutoring Experience

  • I decided early on that I did not want to major in Math, but I still took a variety of math courses including Calculus, Discrete Mathematics, Linear Algebra, Statistics, and Analysis.

  • I tutored on evenings and weekends to support myself through college and to gain experience overcoming obstacles that my future students may face.

  • One of the most memorable students I tutored was Danielle, who had been diagnosed ADD and had documented learning disabilities related to content retention and comprehension. We overcame these obstacles by using strategies that most accommodated for her visual and hands-on learning style.

K-12 Math Experience

  • At younger ages, math caused anxiety for me due to seemingly constant testing (e.g. Benchmark preparation and testing, CIM testing and assessments). Rumors spread through schools that students that did not meet these benchmarks would not advance to the next grade.

  • Throughout elementary and middle school, I was fascinated with concepts such as Order of Operations, Times Tables, and Algebra.

  • In 8th grade I took Algebra and was on a math competitive team that played against other schools in the region.

  • Wanting to challenge myself and develop a competitive academic profile, I took advanced classes in math including Advanced Algebra and AP Calculus
