Francis Cecil Sumner

Education

Francis Cecil Sumner was a very smart kid, he had started college at the age 15 and by the time anyone knew it, he started following his dreams. At Lincoln University he became really good friends with James P. Porter, who was a professor of psychology. Francis first teachhing job wat at Willserforce University as a professor of philosophy in the fall of 1920. Soon he has switched over to a position at West Virginia college where he was happy with the school and the enviroment.

Being a Leader

Francis Cecil Sumner was born on December 7, 1895 in Pine Bluff Arkansas. Soon Francis knew what he wanted to do with his life. He started out as an official abstractor for Psychological Bullentin & Journal of Social Psychology.

In 1920, on June 14th when he recieved his Ph.D from Clark University, Francis became the first African American to receive to Ph.D in psychology.

The End

After 7 years of being on staff and writing many controversal articles involving the criticisms of colleges and universities and thier treatment of African Americans, he made sure everyone knew how he felt.

On January 12, 1954 Francis Cecil Sumner died from a heart attack outside of his home in Washington.

He was the first Africian American to recieve a Ph.D in psychology. He earned it from Clarks University in 1920. Francis had one brother named Eugene. In 1911, he enrolled at Lincoln Univeristy at only the age of 15.

In 1931 Francis had the opportunity to attend the First International Congress for Religious Psychology held at the Unversity of Vienna. While there he presented a paper called, "Mental Hygiene and Religion."

Franic believed that in order to develop a strong program to train black psychologists, psychology departments needed to be autonomous units.
