Our Goals
Challenge
essayist
No young essayist embarks on such rabbit trails on purpose; often, a confusing or jumbled paragraph is a sign he has forgotten his main point.
my
To avoid turning your own paragraphs, then, into incoherent dribble, make sure always to state your point up front, clearly, and concisely.
coherent
Develop a coherent paragraph.
1. Increase our stake in the language.
2. Learn what makes coherent paragraphs.
3. Learn how to evaluate our paragraph for coherency.
It is your promise to discuss and fully explain the concise thought you have just stated.
A topic sentence states the controlling idea of a paragraph, the point every subsequent sentence exists to prove.
tangential
hierarchy
Think of the topic sentence as your contract with the reader.
It will quickly lose coherence, however, if you begin to break your promise by chasing tangential subjects.
Good paragraphs begin with strong topic sentences.
As long as your sentences elaborate on your topic sentence, you honor your contract, and your paragraph will be coherent.
