Lyrical dance has the power to transform culture and emotion through the knowledge and movements it produces, by investigating the truth of opinions

It allows an individual to express his or herself through a style of dance that portrays human-related emotions.

History

Choreographers

  • The roots of lyrical dance can be traced back to Russia in the early 20th century.
  • Lyrical started turning into its own dance style in the 1970’s as a form of Jazz that told a story or classic ballet.
  • Lyrical dance did not gain popularity until the 1990s and by the early 2000’s some of the world's biggest studios started offered classes in lyrical dance.

What is Lyrical?

Lyrical dance is a fusion of ballet and jazz dance techniques, creating an intense and emotional dance style.

Terminology

  • Arabesque - balance on one leg with the other leg extended behind.
  • Attitude - A vertical position of the body supported by one leg, with the other, knee bent, raised behind.
  • Dèveloppé - Meaning to develop.
  • Jeté - Throwing step.
  • Penché - Leaning.
  • Piroutté: “Whirl or spin”.

Costumes

For lyrical dancers, it is important that their costumes are made with lightweight, breathable, stretchy fabrics so that the dancer can be comfortable and move freely.
