Vivian Lee

Kohlbergs pyramid of morality

towards the end of the documentary, Ronald was at the level of "principal"

  • he realized he was in prison taking care of inmates instead of at home taking care of his mother
  • he will still follow all the guards rules and prison regulations

Ronald Ratliff

Delaying gratification and what it has to do with crime

"criminals" want what they want, and they want it now.

They usually dont think about ways they are able to get what they want legally and they dont think about the reprocautions of their actions , for example :

  • they need money, instead of getting a job , they choose to steal the money
  • they see something that catches their eyes, so they have to have it. even if it means hurting someone

enjoying intimate relationships

ronald will develop special bonds with the patients he's helped

empathetic

while working with patients he will learn their stories and feel the pains they feel having to die without their loved ones around

secure attachment to mother

since his mother raised him right, i believe he will take care of all his patients as if they were his mother, with the same respect and love

Ability to share feelings

he will feel sadness and grief when his patients pass away

Kohlberg's pryamid of morality

In the begining of the film, i believe ronald was at the "good boy attitude" and the "law and order morality" stages.

in Ronalds case, his need for narcotics was more important than the reprocutions of posessing illegal substances and a fire arm.

Parenting role

Authoritative

  • ronald knew about the 3 strike law

  • his temptations for narcotics was more important than his need for freedom
  • it seems that he was at peace with being in prison for the rest of his life and didn't seem to act out or disrespect the guards

Childhood attachment style

  • he obeyed the prison rules and regulations

ronald is adopting authoritative parenting role, he listens to his patients needs and wants and when the patient doesnt want to cooperate, he asks them why they dont want to and try to reason with them to get the outcome he wants , he doesnt make the patients feel like they are being bossed around. the authoritative role is contributing to his moral development because hes learning how to deal with things not going his way, but in a sensible style. where reasoning is used instead of violence which helps make him more level headed, understanding and reasonable

  • drug posession
  • possession of firearm
  • life without parole, 3 strikes
  • realized why he was there and how he made the wrong choices
  • Secure attachment to mother

Ronald has a very strong bond with his monther, "still cares for people because my mom raised me right"

  • Ability to share feelings

you can tell that he is a very sensitive person

  • Empathetic

  • Enjoys intimate relationships
