Review

The overall theme of the story is to show the reader how people can discriminate against someone for the smallest reasons, like where they live and to show how it can hurt someone.

Overall, it was a good story and was written to show how people discriminate based on the smallest of things, like where you live. I would recommend this book because it shows how humans can judge people and how it can hurt them.

  • Eugene's Mom judge Elena, as soon as she found out she lived in the El Building she asked her to leave and told her Eugene didn't need her help.
  • She thought of herself as a higher class Puerto Rican than Elena was and didn't want her hanging out with her son.
  • Eugene's mom discriminated against Elena for no reason, just based off where she lived.
  • Elena went home is disbelief and sadness because of Eugene's mom.

Plot Structure

American History By Judith Cofer

  • Elena, a fourteen year old girl, who lives in the "El building" is the main character of the story.
  • The point of the book is to teach the reader not to discriminate people that you don't even know.
  • The story is in Paterson, New Orleans.
  • The part that matters most is when Eugene's mom tells Elena to go home and that Eugene doesn't want to work with Elena, just because of where she lived, it shows how people discriminate and how it could hurt someone.

  • The conflict of the story starts off as Elena being bullied. Then, it becomes the presidents death. Lastly, the overall conflict of the story was the Eugene's mom asked Elena to leave just based off where she lived.
  • The character faces external conflict with the other characters involved in the story.

This is shown because she doesn't have a lot of friends. She watches the house outside her window and is curious as to what is going on inside. Also she is sensitive to the bullies and to Eugene's mom.

When she asked Elena to leave just because she lived in the El Building which shows she is judgemental and rude. Although, they were both Puerto Rican she thought of herself as a higher class,so she had a lot of pride.

Since Elena lived in the El building, Eugene's mom didn't want her to study with Eugene and asked her to leave. This shows that Eugene's mom believes she is of a higher class and that
