Intriguing Seven Piece Puzzle

By Amanda Caruso

Harry Perigal's grave stone carving original (right) and outlined (left)

A man named Harry Perigal, 1801-1898, was an amateur mathematician that supposedly created the Tangram that represents Pythagorean Theorem. On his grave stone, a diagram of "Dissecting Proof" (the Tangram design for Pythagoras) was carved. No one knows for certain that he himself requested this on his grave stone, but many assume he felt that it was his greatest accomplishment and wanted it to be on his stone.

Here are a few examples of the patterns that may be created with a Tangram.

What I learned during this project:

  • Tangrams are originally composed of seven pieces
  • A Tangram for Pythagorean Theorem is called "Dissecting Proof"
  • There are only a few successful designs that will make the Dissecting Proof work
  • Harry Perigal is believed to have discovered the Dissecting Proof
  • Perigal's grave had a diagram of the Dissecting Proof on it
