What is Secular Painting?

Ideas that were introduced by Secular Art

Secular art is artwork that focuses on a more humanistic view, an "increased awareness of nature," and a renewal of classical ideals . There is an increase of portrait painting as a sign of wealth, as apposed to land being a sign of wealth. The definition of secular according the the Merriam-Webster Dictionary is "not spiritual : of or relating to the physical world and not the spiritual world." This includes the increase of portraits and representations of myths and stories in artwork.

How Secular Art Influences us Today

  • Artwork became less about religion and more about capturing realistic qualities.
  • More people wanted their portraits because it symbolized higher social class.
  • Artists began signing their work and it became a respected occupation.
  • Names of popular artists were sought out to be commissioned.

  • It made people think about matters other than religion
  • People became more concerned with wealth and prosperity then religion
  • The wealthy (and upper middle class) had art made for them and the poor (and lower middle class) did not
  • Secular art helped initiate a capitalist society
  • Art became a way to show off wealth
  • Many great works of art stemmed from the secular paintings of this time

Mythology in Secular Art

Artists began paint not only about

Christianity but also about the Greek and Roman gods and goddesses. Artists painted the Greek and Roman religion as well as portraits and religious paintings during the 15th and 16th centuries. This had a huge impact on people's views of not only art but religions as well. In the Renaissance, classical myths,or traditionally familiar stories about gods and heroes, were appropriated as subjects for various types for visual arts.

Northern Secular Art

Northern: Although most of the artwork was sacred, there were some portraits done. This piece is a mix of sacred and secular art in the north.
