"Heracles's wit prevails.
Golden apples retrieved!"
Heracles is charged by Eurystheus
to find the golden apples of the
Hesperides, Gaea's wedding gift
to Hera. However, he is told, they are
guarded by a hundred-headed dragon.
In order to find out where the garden is,
he catches and questions Nereus, the
old man of the sea. Nereus tells Heracles where to go.
After Heracles completed his ten labors, Eurystheus declared that neither the Hydra task nor the Augean stables counted, and that Heracles had to finish two more tasks...
"Heracles immediately agreed to take over Atlas' task, but craftily asked Atlas to hold the sky temporarily while he put a pad upon his head to make the weight more tolerable."
- World Mythology
This quote shows that Heracles is as clever as he is strong. His cleverness enables him to escape Atlas and win the day.
