To play Slim, I have chosen Will Arnett. Not only is he perfect because he has my last name, he's also perfect because of his ability to play a wide variety of roles as well as he looks like the Slim I imagined. Obviously Will Arnett is tall and slim, just as the character's name implies. On pages 33 and 34 of Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck describes Slim as having dark hair and an "ageless" face.
I met a couple of good people workin' here. George an' Lennie. They came 'round here just mainly know'n 'bout buckin' barley, so I helped 'im out a lil' bit if they needed it. George's a little stuck up, but he's a good person. He keeps Lennie outta trouble. He seems a lil' harsh sometimes, but he jus' does what's best for 'im. Poor ol' Lennie ain't as smarter than the rest of us, but you ain't need no smart person to be a good worker, an' that's what Lennie is. He likes animals and he likes to hear about this farm that 'im an' George are gonna buy when they get 'nough money. I like em' both perty well. Jus' good ol people.
But poor Lennie don't know 'is own strength too well. For example I tried tellin' 'im 'bout Curley's wife, and to not go 'round 'er, but Bad things started happin' one night when Lennie got to close 'er and she was try'n to "be nice" to Lennie and he starts strokin' 'er hair. Well, he started strokin' little too hard an snapped 'er neck. But he didn't do it outta no meanness. Jus' didn't know. George found 'im at the river and makes 'im stand up facin' it. Then they talk 'bout that farm again an' then George shot 'im. No nice way a puttin' it. It seems a lil' harsh, but George did the right thing.
I get up at seven, yeah and I go to work at nine
I got no time for livin' yes, I'm workin' all the time
It seems to me I could live my life
A lot better than I think I am I guess that's why they call me
They call me the workin' man
They call me the workin' man I guess that's what I am
I get home at five o'clock and I take myself out a nice, cold beer
Always seem to be wond'rin' why there's nothin' goin' down here
It seems to me I could live my life
A lot better than I think I am I guess that's why they call me
They call me the workin' man they call me the workin' man
I guess that's what I am
Well they call me the workin' man
I guess that's what I am

Working Man by the band Rush is the ideal theme song for Slim because, as expressed in my description earlier, he's a very hard worker on the farm. Steinbeck describes him on page 33 as, " A jerkline skinner, the prince of the ranch, capable of driving ten, sixteen, even twenty mules with a single line to the leaders."
For my character report, I have chosen to do Slim. He has definitely been my favorite character because of his hard work and his kind and honest opinions.
"He's a nice fella, guy don't need no sense to be a nice fella. Seems to me sometimes it jus' works the other way around. Take a real smart guy and he ain't hardly ever a nice fella." ~ Slim: Of Mice and Men, pg. 40.
Even though Slim was describing Lennie, I feel like this quote is also an accurate description of Slim's character.
My Symbol for Slim is a picture of rough, working hands, that in a way still seem gentle. I feel that this symbolizes his character because throughout the book, he worked on the farm in a time period where most hard jobs had to be done by hand. Despite his hard work, he still took time to care about other people.
