The Lesson of the Moth

Literature

Archy and Mehitabel

Question #1

Why didn't the author use any punctuation?

Lojayn

In 1916, Marquis introduced Archy, a fictional cockroach. Archy would climb up onto the typewriter and hurl himself at the keys, typing out stories of the daily challenges of a cockroach. Archy was unable to operate the shift key on the typewriter, so all of his verse was written without capitalization or punctuation. Archy's best friend was Mehitabel, an alley cat. The two of them shared a series of day-to-day adventures that made satiric commentary on daily life in the city during the 1910s and 1920s. .

Moths are attracted to lights.

Cockroaches are repulsed by light.

People are two types, some are brave enough to go to the public and do what they feel is right, and others are like cockroaches the moment they're noticed they just hide in darkness.

Summary

Shaima S.

The poem tells a story of a moth, an insect that has a strange habit of being attracted to the bright light. The story is being told by a fictional cockroach named Archy. The cockroach finds the moth trying to break into a light bulb to get the light inside; when he asks why he is doing this, the moth replies: “It is better to be a part of beauty for one instant and then cease to exist than to exist forever and never be a part of beauty.”

One of the major symbols in the poem is the flame in which the moth is willing to die for. It implies that there are things that certain people are willing to do even if it may cost them their lives. The cockroach in the poem represents all the people who live their lives very carefully to ensure a long one. The moth symbolizes all the people who don't.
