Was containment an effective policy to thwart communist expansion?

  • Objective: Provide evidence that explains the Power Struggle during The Cold War.

Containment was very effective in stopping the spread of communism. Without it more percentage of the world would have fallen into communist control during this time; Most likely all of Europe and most of Asia. Examples of containment prevailing would be the Berlin blockade and Korean war; however it failed in keeping Vietnam from turning communist

NATO

SEATO

POSITIVES

  • North Atlantic Treaty Organization was a created alliance in 1949 between U.S, Canada, Belgium, France, Germany, and other Western countries to stop the spread of Soviet Union influence on other non- communist countries.
  • States that it will help any other member with military power if in a threat.( www.bmlv.gv)
  • Soviet realized their intensions and formed with other communist countries to form a military force titled the Warsaw Pact in 1955.( www.nato.int.com)
  • Purpose of NATO is to prove that the U.S were serious on thwarting communism and any other future movement of communism for example with South Korea, South Vietnam, and Latin american (camilaparrap.wordpress.com)

NEGATIVE

  • Around 1957, U.S were beginning to build nuclear weapons and mainly were relying on the threat of not having to use their nuclear missiles so that other countries, not wanting to start a nuclear war, will want to veto the usage of them too.
  • Some may argue that NATO is a waste of money and government effort due to all the other policies on stopping communism and other democracy deprived countries under communist control.

Std. 1 & 7

The Southeast Asia Treaty Organization sole purpose was to have countries come together to stop the spread of communism. The irony is that only two countries from the southeast Asia became officials members. This role became important during the Vietnam War. Using this policy to reassure that uniting Vietnam was better than keeping North Vietnam and South Vietnam separated (www.history.state.gov) D.S As the organization of SEATO weakened, According to the website, the article states, "Pakistan formally left SEATO in 1973 because of had failed to provide it with assistance in its ongoing conflict against India"(www.history.state.gov). Britain and the U.S. couldn't agree on providing security in case of an Indian aggression. Furthermore, Pakistan joined SEATO only for the potential for receiving support in used in its struggles against India. J.A.

  • Containment, in the case of Vietnam, was not effective because the country started off divided at the 17th parallel (North being communist and south being democratic) and then at the end of the war, the whole country fell to communism in March 29 1973 when the last of the U.S troops left the rest of the fighting to the south Vietnamese .
  • The objective of containment is not to completely eradicate communism but simply just to stop the spread of it and containment failed to protect this country from communism.(Notes)

"Everything depends on the Americans. If they want to make war for 20 years then we shall make war for 20 years. If they want to make peace, we shall make peace and invite them to tea afterwards."

- Ho Chi Minh, December 1966

Ho Chi Minh is saying that they are prepared to fight the U.S or demoracy for no matter how long they had to. Containment was not effective here because communism eventually prevailed in Vietnam.

Berlin Wall

  • The blockade of Berlin, the capital of German, was the first serious conflicts of the Cold War. After World War II, Germany's capital city was divided into two zones, East Germany was occupied under Soviet Union communism influence and West Germany was occupied under the United States democracy influence. The living conditions in E.Germany and W.Germany became distinctly different. West Germany had more freedom of being able to live well, to work, and to travel. East Germany became its own country but it was under the influence of the Soviet Union, yet individuals freedoms were severely restricted. Due to Truman's order, the Allied powers used the Berlin Airlift to transport food and supplies to West Germany. The purpose to build the Berlin Wall was to keep democracy out, but in reality the Berlin Wall was used for East Germany people from escaping the inhuman life under Soviet rule to go to West Germany.
