Earthquakes

Earthquake record breakers!

Did you know that the most powerful earthquake ever recorded was on the 22nd May 1960 in Chile and was 9.5 on the richter scale

The costliest earthquake ever was the earthquake AND tsunami that hit Japan in 2011 causing $235 billion in property damage.

What are tectonic plates?

Tectonic plates make up the crust of the earth, which is basically the layer of the earth that your feet are touching right now ( or the building you're in. )

A general overview

The Richter scale

The Richter scale is basically a scale used to measure powerful an earthquake is, so you might not even feel a 1.0 earthquake but you could probably fall over in a 4.0 earthquake.

Earthquakes are destructive events that happen when two tectonic plates rub against each other underneath land.

They can kill thousands of people but sometimes they be weak enough just to shake a needle. Some of the largest earthquakes happen in the region of the Pacific Ocean. In an area called the 'Ring of Fire'

How do earthquakes happen?

Earthquakes happen when tectonic plates rub inst each other in their tide-like movements across the world (extremely slowly)
