The American Midwest

The Midwest

The Midwest is the source of truth, honesty, purity, and uncorrupted living. Nick was eager to escape his family roots in the Midwest at the beginning of the story because "the Middle West now seemed like the ragged edge of the universe", so the opportunity to relocate to the excitement and sophistication of the East was very attractive to him.

New York City

New York City

New York is for Tom a place to play and misbehave with his mistress Myrtle. For Myrtle, New York is escape from her horrible life with her husband (in the "valley of ashes"). New York for Nick is a place of a different kind of opportunity (success in business). It is for most characters a place outside of most of the action of the story, it is a place that's an escape from their real life.

East Egg

(Old Money)

In the novel old money means that your family has always been wealthy. You would be educated and act more sophisticated than the West Egg people. This is the Buchanans. East Egg is for people with "old money" and looks down on lower West Egg. West Egg is not an economically lower place , but it is populated with people who weren't born wealthy. Tom and Daisy live in East Egg since Tom was born wealthy.

Gatsby's House

The theme of wealth is prevalent Throughout The Great Gatsby; Jay Gatsby's house truly represents wealth. But seeing the valley of ashes, a large gap in wealth is also important.

East Egg

West Egg

(New Rich)

Nick and Jay Gatsby represent the people of West egg. They are wealthy but they don't have the social behaviors of the East Egg people because they were not born that way. They try hard to get to the social level of East Egg (Gatsby throwing parties and living a lavish lifestyle)

West Egg

The Valley of Ashes

The Eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg

This billboard has eyes that peer over the desolate ashy ground. The eyes also look over a greater area to judge the characters' decisions and actions as if it were God or even the reader's eyes.

The Valley of Ashes

The Valley of Ashes Symbolizes the decomposition of the characters life's ; throughout the story they slowly come to an end. Gatsby dies, nick goes back to where he used to live, tom and daisy get back like if nothing had ever happened.
