Questions to Consider

Summary (Cont.)

What is the theme of the book? I think the theme of the book was courage, becuase without it, Eric and David would both be hopeless

What was your favorite scene in the book? My favorite scene was when Eric was telling David that he should stand up for himself and then David put his fingers up and quietly said 'bang bang.' I like this scene because it really comes out of nowhere and makes you think what might happen next.

After a while of seeing David getting bullied and beaten up, Eric realizes that this was wrong and it needed to be stopped. Will Eric stand up to Griff, or will he be the bystander that didn't do something when he could've?

Conclusion

Have you ever been the new kid at school who fits in but you're just kind of there? This is what happens to Eric Hayes in the realistic fiction novel, Bystander, by James Preller

Honestly, when I picked this book up, I thought it would be another cheesy story warning us of the dangers of bullying, but when I was about 20 pages in, I realized that this was a very good book and I found it hard to put it down at the end. Bystander was very well written and had a very good message behind it. I would recommend this book to anyone 7th-9th grade due to some language and to anyone who loves a good story touching, comical and heartfelt. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.

Summary

Eric Hayes is the new kid at school, and lucky for him, he meets the most popular boy in 7th grade-Griffin Connelly or Griff-just a week before school starts. Eric soon becomes very good friends with Griff and tells him about his whole life. Even about his dad leaving him, his little brother, Rudy, and his biggest secrets. After about a month at his new school in Long Island, he sees Griff bullying and beating up a less-than-fortunate kid named David Hallenback, who, despite all of his beatings, thinks that he is "friends" with Griff.
