Claver left Spain and came to the New World as a missionary in Cartagena, present-day Columbia and a major slave port.
Claver followed his predecessor's words to be a "slave for all
Negroes."
Born in 1581, Claver was heavily influenced by Catholicism. He enrolled in the University of Barcelona, known for his intelligence and piety.
Claver kept a notebook he wrote while attending that college. He wrote in it:
"I must dedicate myself to the service of God until death, on the understanding that I am like a slave."
He kept this notebook and followed by that quote throughout his life.
Claver would help the sick on the boat, and brought food and medicine to the slaves in locked up quarters after they departed the boat.
Big on human dignity, he promised them that God's saving love would help them, and many listened and converted.
He spent 40 years helping slaves. Throughout that time, an estimated 300,000 slaves were baptized by Claver.
His service went beyond just helping slaves. He also helped plantation owners and gave missions to sailors. He preached in the city square on an almost daily basis.
In today's times, we cannot let
anyone's race, creed, gender, sexuality, etc. stop us from helping out.
In a diverse school like FP, we cannot let these things get in the way of who we help and not let the criticism from others bother us.
Claver spent four years sick and bedstruck, almost no help from anyone.
He died on September 8th, 1654 and, although was not liked by officials, the city magistrates ordered a public burial.
This Prezi will explain the life of St. Peter Claver, and how he came to be a saint.
It will also explain how Claver's
life can relate to a teenager
today.
Claver used a cockle shell to baptize the slaves, like the one pictured below.
In 1888, Pope Leo XIII canonized St. Peter Claver a saint and declared him the patron saint of the works toward the care of slaves.
He was later also named the patron saint of Columbia for all
of the service he did that took place there.
Claver became a saint after a woman named Barbra was diagnosed with ulcers, and after ten years of prayer, was healed with help from the touch of a priest.
The second miracle was with a German immigrant named Ignatius. He got a job in a St. Louis Soap Factory where he hit his breast.
After two years, a tumor formed. Doctors proved him hopeless after
years, until his wife had heard a prayer about Claver. After a month,
Ignatius was healed fully.
He was also known to
be seen baptizing the
slaves, shown right.
