- Sense of musical drama made him stand out

- Opened March 12, 1926 in the middle of Harlem

- Two story ballroom

- One of the first racially integrated public places

- Owners made $250,000 a year and bouncers made $100 a night

- Bouncers were ex-boxers and basketball players

- Could served over 5,000 people at once

- Floor replaced every three years

Billie Holiday

Chick Webb

- Billie Holiday, Chick Webb, and Duke Ellington were all apart of the re-inventing and popularizing of jazz and swing

- Places like the Cotton Club and Savoy Club made people more aware of jazz, swing, and african american musicians

- Jazz and swing music drummer

- Worked as a paper boy to buy drums

- Played professionally at age 11

- One of the best regarded drummers of swing style music

- "The daddy of them all."
