The earthquake I'm going to talk about is the Queen Charlotte Islands. It occurred on August 22, 1949 and had an 8.1 magnitude. It's so far the most severe Earthquake Canada has ever experienced. The shaking was so severe on the Haida Gwaii that cows were knocked off their feet.

How many Earthquakes occur in Canada

Therefore this was the most severe earthquake Canada has ever experienced. It is all because of two plates that are sliding past each other. No one wants that to happen again after all the damages it caused.

More than 4,000 Earthquakes occur in Canada each year, you can't feel the majority of them. In Canada, earthquakes occur along the West Coast, in the Cordillera, High Arctic, Eastern Canada and along the eastern seaboard.

What is an earthquake?

A geologist with the Geological Survey of Canada working on the north end of Graham Island could not stand up. Chimneys tumbled, an oil tank even collapsed at Cumshewa Inlet. On the adjacent mainland cars bounced and leapt all around.

An earthquake is a vibrating motion caused from the movement of rock along the fault line beneath the Earth's surface.

What is a magnitude scale?

The richter magnitude scale conveys a magnitude number to find how much energy is released by an earthquake. The smaller the number on the scale is, the less severe the earthquake is. The higher the number on the scale is the harder and more severe the earthquake is.
