By: Joanne Park

Significance

The events I chose are:

  • Foreign Policy: Korean War:June 25, 1950 – July 27, 1953
  • Canadian-American relations: Cuban Missile Crisis-October 14, 1962 – October 28, 1962
  • People, Technology and Government: Hippies- Early 60s- mid 70s
  • Canadian Unity:The October Crisis- October 5, 1970- October

All these events are from 1950- mid 1970s. So on the timeline, the years will go from 1950-1970.

The era of hippies started in the early 60s. They were part of a youth movement and promoted peace and love throughout the 1960s. They would make their statement through the arts such as music, paintings, drama and fashion. They had their own freedom and individuality. Hippies are significant because they brought a lot of change in the world. They promoted peace, changed the style of music (introducing rock) and fashion throughout the years of their existence. They have definitely changed the way of people back then and that impacts us now. Some things include having a new attitude towards different races, women's rights, accepting gays etc. The hippies have made a big change and contribution to develop the society we have now.

Significance

The start of the October Crisis began with the kidnapping of James Cross, a British trade commissioner on October 5th, 1970. Members of the FLQ kidnapped 2 very important men of the government and the FLQ's would only give them back if the government met their demands. The FLQ was a Quebecois terrorist organization that expressed their needs through violent means, causing the October Crisis. The Quebec government requested assistance from the Canadian Armed Forces and that's when they were alarmed that the situation was getting out of control. The Federal government invoked the War Measures Act, which put an end to the October Crisis. (The one who introduces the act is PM Trudeau- Canadian). It gave the government special legislation, under the Act, against the FLQ's. Some actions in the War Measures Act included patrolling streets, curfews and a minimum amount of freedom. This was a significant Act that helped to stop the FLQ's from continuing their actions.

On October 1962, an American plane was sent to watch over Cuba to be secretly photographing the atomic bombs made by Soviet Union. The Soviets and Cubans misunderstood this action as an attempt to attack at the missiles and sent threats to North America. In the end, America and Russia decided to make a secret agreement and slowly move apart from this issue. The significance of the Cuban Missile Crisis was that it forced great nations and the super powers to reconsider having a nuclear war and also make choices peacefully even though they were enemies. The Cuban missile crisis brought the world very close to a nuclear war also would've been known as WW3. The entire world would have seen what a nuclear weapon can do and how much damage can be caused due to a single weapon. This event has taught both superpower countries to have peace and make an agreement together.

The Korean War began when the North Korean Communist army crossed the 38th Parallel and invaded the non-Communist South Korea on June 25, 1950. The US sided with the South, and Soviet Union sided with the North. More than 26,000 Canadians served in the Korean War. There were more than 2000 casualties and 517 soldiers dead. These soldiers were inscribed in the Korean War Book of Remembrance as heroes. The war went on for 3 years from both sides mainly because neither side wanted to appear weak. Canada’s contribution in the Korean War marked a new stage in Canada's development as a nation. Canadian action in Korea was followed by peacekeeping operations which promoted international freedom and maintain peace.
