For the Women

The women of India wear clothing called saris and salwar kameez. The saris is a traditional dress made of silk, cotton or factory blends. The fabric is wrapped around the body of the women in countless different ways. The salwar kameez is a pant, usually worn with a long shirt.

The turban is a type of head wear that is made of cloth that the men wear. They wrap it around their heads in order to protect their hair because they do not cut it. It has become mandatory that all men wear them. The Bindi is a decorative mark that is usually red, worn in the middle of most indian women's forheads. It can signify a married women and it is also believed to help ward off bad luck.

India is the second largest populated country in the world and is only one third of the size of USA. There are many different cultures and many different types of clothing that the people wear. The most popular of tradtional clothing include the dhoti, kurta, salwar kameez, sari, and sherwani.

Traditional Indian clothing for Men are the dhoti, kurta and sherwanis. The dhoti is a loose skirt or shorts wrap and is usually wore alone without a shirt. These are good for the high heat temperatures that they live in. The kurta or shewanis are long loose pants that they also wear. They are usually accompanied by a loose buttoned up shirt.

  • Gold is a very important part of their fashion. The women of India love to accessorize their outfits with gold jewellery.
