Cupid, ancient Roman god of love in all its varieties, the counterpart of the Greek god Eros and the equivalent of Amor in Latin poetry. According to myth, Cupid was the son of Mercury, the winged messenger of the gods, and Venus, the goddess of love.
Despite the dominance of Christianity, these myths did not loose there influence, especially thanks to the renaissance era, when poets artists and musicians gave a new life to greek Mythology in the west.
Once again one of these myths found itself underpowered by a dominant religion this time Islam. Once again the mythology survived thanks to the artists.
