Othello, William Shakespeare
"In following him, I follow but myself ..."
(1.1.59)
In what ways does Iago manipulate others to achieve his own ends?
1. Hides behind a facade
What you see is not what you get ...
Looks really 'are' deceiving
Not everything is always as it seems ...
- Ability to deceive others
- With Iago, what you see is only 'surface bound', only but the 'tip of the iceberg'
The evil behind the smiling face ...
- All are 'shielded' and 'blinded' from his malevolent and dark ways
- Takes advantage of his so-called "honest" image
"Honest Iago " you say? How ironic.
- Iago poses as 'honest' and 'trustworthy' and friend to all
Misrepresentation allows Iago to gain trust from all those around him
- All 'blindly' refer to him as "honest Iago"
No one sees him for the evil and deceiving man that he really is
- His alleged "honest" reputation is what ruins everyone
Underhandedly exerts control and power over others to fulfill his goals
2. Exploits weaknesses
Brings the worst out in people
Iago
3 Key points:
Manipulates others by excessively using their individual weaknesses as a means to their downfall and ultimate defeat.
Roderigo
Blinded by 'infatuation' and 'passion' ...
Othello
Made sightless by 'love' and 'jealousy' ...
- His weakness is his alleged 'love' for Desdemona
Michael Cassio
"No more beersies for you Cassio"
- His weakness is his intense love for Desdemona, and excessive nature of jealousy
- Iago acknowledges this weakness, and manipulates Roderigo to believe he will help him be with Desdemona
- Cassio's weakness is 'alcoholism'
- Iago gets Othello to believe that Desdemona and Cassio are in a secret affair
- Roderigo is left oblivious to Iago's plot resulting in his downfall
- Iago effectively persuades Cassio into drinking, with a devised plan to sabotage his reputation and rank
- Othello's jealousy led to him murdering his Desdemona, and ultimately his own downfall
- Cassio naively serves in Iago's plan for vengeance on Othello
Imagery to being 'Puppeteer'
<3 xoxo
"Iago the Great Puppet Master"
What you see is not what you get ...
A Puppeteer:
- is a person who manipulates a inanimate object, like a puppet
- is usually hidden from the audience
- controls the puppet by the use of strings, rods or wires, or directly by his/her own hands.
Brings the worst out in people ...
