The picture shown on the right describes racist and discriminatory people in the world perfectly. This is because as shown in the picture, these peoples views are covered by their own opinons. Most racist people in the world don't see the whole picture and act and judge based on the things they have been brought up with, which is sometimes not their fault. In Merchant of Venice Antonio was against Jewish people basically only because he has been taught to be and follows what everyone else does. He has never been specifically targeted by a Jewish person himself but still won't change his opinions on them, and acts racist and discriminatory towards them for no reason.
This picture empowers and represents women to not be thought of as weak or vulnerable or incapable by men! Sexism and gender inequality was and still is very common and this picture helps girls to not feel discouraged by the oppression of men.
Gender inequality is very present in The Merchant of Venice, the whole play is based around how her father's test gets to decides who she marries. It was also very common in that time for women to be thought of as lesser, weaker, and "men's property". This picture fights this discrimination against women.
"Hie thee, gentle Jew.
The Hebrew will turn Christian; he grows kind."-Antonio to Shylock (1.3.191-192)
Antonio is being sarcastic here. He's saying that he cannot fathom Shylock the Jew being kind. He's saying that Shylock can't be kind while being Jewish. Antonio is being racist saying that there is no such thing as a nice Jew.
"You call me misbeliever, cutthroat dog,
And spet upon my Jewish gaberdine..."-Shylock to Antonio 1.3.121-122
Shylock is talking to Antonio about the names Antonio has called him in the past. He's said all of these mean things to Shylock because of his religion and his job.
" If he have the condition of
a saint and the complexion of a devil, I had rather
he should shrive me than wive me."-Portia to Prince of Morocco (1.2.127-131)
In this quote Portia is being racist toward Prince of Morocco. She is saying that even if he was as kind as a saint, she would rather not marry him because of his dark skin.
This picture shows that everybody is the same on the inside no matter how different we look from one another, or what our skin colour is or what we believe in, we are all equal. This relates to our book
'The Merchant of Venice' because in the book a few people were treated poorly for their beliefs and/or skin colour.
In the article we chose it describes how in a small town of Trollhattan in Sweden, there has recently been a school attack where two people were killed. Based on evidence this was ruled as a hate crime, and suspect Anton Petterson acted on prejudice against immigrants. Basically, he shot these two innnocent students because he didnt like where they were from.
This article relates well with the Shakespearean play, Merchant of Venice. In the article it describes how this man hated and wanted to hurt people of colour, just because of their race. He was against immigrants and felt the need to show his hatred by killing two Somali and Syrian students.
In the Merchant of Venice, many of the people are against people practicing the Jewish faith, all because of their religion. They have no real reason to hate Jews but do only because they may have different values and views on things. In the play, a Jew named Shylock gets harassed and hurt by a white man only because of his religion, just like the two students who sadly went to the extreme of losing their lives because of a racist that was against their race.
The theme we chose that we think relates well with the Shakespearean play and modern times is prejudice and discrimination.
Just in case you didn’t already know…
Prejudice is described as a preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience. Discrimination is the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex.

In our tv show clip Raven is getting discriminated for being a different race. This occurs when she is searching for a job and she comes across a store she would like to work at, unfortunately Raven finds out that they will not hire her because of her skin colour. This is how the tv show clip we chose represents our these of prejudice and discrimination.
Prejudice and discrimination is still very common in the modern world, even though we have made some big improvements and taken some large steps forward. For example, we no longer have segregated schools, workplaces, transportation, washrooms, and other now public and non-exclusive things. Also before 1918,women were not allowed to vote, but now all women can no matter what gender, religion or race. So yes, even though it's still a big issue we've made some improvements.
