Top 10: Unique Adaptations in Animals

#10 Octopi- Camouflage

#4 Pistol Shrimp- Punching Fist

An octopus has the ability to change its skin color thanks to the chromatophores that it has. These cells are able to reflect light and change their color and contrast. A very interesting thing is the objects they choose to resemble, sometimes they behave like dangerous animals to frighten predators. They mimmick what they see and learn very quickly. They are very intelligent, like me :)

The Pistol Shrimp is a small crustatian, it can render its prey unconsious. It does this by snapping its claws together, creatig a jet of water traveling faster than 60 mph. This jet of water collapses in on itsel and makes a noise louder that the Concorde, a supersonic airliner jet. This noise, plus the impact of the jet, can knock out the shrimp's prey instantly, so it can eat them.

9# Olm-Pigmentation and Eyes

#5 Tasmainian Devil- Ears and Screams

Although the Tasmainian Devil looks cute, it is an extremely territorial animal. It eats mainly dead animals. When it is angry, its ears turn red due to blood flow, so this is a way to warn off predators. When competing over the same food with others, it will scream to scare away competetors.

The Olm is native to Europe. It is similar to a salamander, and it lives in subacuatic caves. Its adaptations are the result of a life in complete darkness, in its underground habitat. The olm's eyes are undeveloped, leaving it blind, while its other senses, particularly smell and hearing, are very developed. Because of that, its skin grew over its eyes and its skin lost all pigmentation.

#1- Poison Dart Frog- Poison Skin

The Posion Dart Frog is native to South America. Its skin is covered in a layer of poison which can render an opponent dead in seconds, included humans.

#6 Mexican Walking Fish-Ambulatory

#8 Fennec Fox- Heat Dispersion

The Mexican Walking Fish is one of the only fish with arms in the world. It is slightly related to the Olm salamander, and it has the ability to regrow most of it's limbs. It also resembles its young even in old age, because it regenerates all its tissues during its life . So you'll never know how old is one of them.

The Fennec Fox has very large ears that help it dispersing heat and stay at a comfortable temperature. In the desert habitat, where it lives in, it is dificult to find food above ground, so they use their large ears to hear and find preys in tunnells underground.

2# Icefish- AntiFreeze Proteins

#3 Polar Bear- Black Skin

#7 Aye-Aye- Opposable Finger

This Ice Fish is very unique because it contains AntiFreeze Glucoproteins in its blood that allows it to survive in freezing and deep waters.

The Aye-Aye lives in tropical rainforests. It is a nocturnal mammal, and it spends most of the day curled up in the leaves. It uses a long middle finger to tap on trees and find holes filled with insects. They use the same finger to reach in them and scoop out it's food, and also to peel tropical fruits.

Polar Bears also deserve mention for surviving in conditions like the melting ice caps. Because of that, they have less land to walk on and less territory to hunt everyday, what is really dangerous for their lives. But the Polar Bears unique black skin, under their white fur, gives them the ability to absorb and keep the heat from the sun. Thanks to this, they can survive in the polar biome.
