Visualization of costume for the characters of Mr. Toad

Gordon Craig Theatre, Stevenage-

This is their Lady Magistrate Costume. I like this because it looks like a traditional Magistrate and it looks neat and professional. I think it would be better with a white powdered wig because it would add to the character. In the script, it mentions that she is quite hefty (at a size 16+), so I think this could also do with a little more padding out to be funny for the audience.

Our Lady Magistrate costume will be a long black cloak, with a pencil skirt underneath and a white shirt. She will also wear a judge wig as she is the main focus of the courtroom scene as she sings. I think our design is better because we are thinking more of the target audience of children to appeal to their humor.

The Royal Opera House has also done a production of The Wind In The Willows which is what Mr. Toad is based on. Thie version is souly based on the theme of ballet. This image shows their costumes for Toad, Mole and Rat.

Toad is wearing a waistcoat, shirt and checked pants that are green and orange to show the colours of a toad. The red waistcoat makes him stand out as the main character- this helps the children identify him. Our toad costume is slightly similar because we also want green checked pants and the colour red to stand out but we want braces as he will also wear a tweed suit to look respectable as he is rich. We will also pad out his costume to look more rounder as is a toad- this makes it more funny to see a fat character on stage. I prefare our costume to theirs because I feel it needs to be closer to the look and colour of a toad which is also why we're

using tweed as it has a rough texture as does thier skin.

Their Mole costume consists of a dirty brown

colour jacket and pants and a brightly coloured sweater vest.

They have also added a hat and glasses. This shows that he lives underground because the colour looks like dust and dirt. the colourful vest may resemble his excited attitude towards new things and being bold. I like this costume because it shows what class he is from as he has a suit but not as nice as rats, it also adds to his personality because he can hide behind his glasses and/or hat when he is nervous. Our Mole costume is a dark brown cord jacket, white shirt and tie, and black or brown pants- including small glasses on the end of his nose. I chose this because the colour brown shows the colour of the animal, the glasses are a quirk for the character because moles can't see well and the tie is because he likes to be neat and tidy hence the spring cleaning. But I prefare their costume design because I like that it is more detailed/thought through because it adds to the meaning.

The Adventures Of Mr. Toad is a musical about a man named Mr. Toad who is childish and energetic who goes from one craze to the next; his newest craze is cars so this musical is about how he goes about stealing one and going to prison. Meanwhile, the weasels are taking over Toad Hall and Rat, Mole and Badger are setting off to help poor toad get his home back.

My specialist area, shared with another member of my class, is costume. I chose costume because I am interested in design of clothes and fashion and I would like to bring life to a production like this (colourful, bright, playful, childish) because it is exciting to see what we could create to be aesthetically pleasing for the children, e.g. bright colours, detail and big/crazy props.

What we need/to order?

This shows their policeman costume, Mole costume and Rosy costume. Their policeman costume is your average uniform but a little more puffy

because they are supposed to be fat. Our policeman costume is very similar this but we're keeping them skinny to be ironic and funny for the audience. Their Mole costume consists of a brown jacket, dark brown pants and a hat. This is similar to our costume but we have also added small glasses as moles cannot see very well as they're used to the dark. This will be funny for the audience because she will act blind every now and again and the glasses will add to this. Their rosy costume is a baby pink dress to show she is fair and sweet. But this doesn't really show she works in a dirty jail and is poor. Our Rosy costume is a scruffy skirt, white blouse and a bonnet. This shows her class status and how her living situation is with her large family who don't get out much.

I prefare our costumes for these characters because we have more little details To add to the development of the characters that will be better for the

audience to enjoythe show,

The Royal Opera House used puppets for the weasels instead of people

whereas we have used chorus members as the weasels in costume and make up. The puppets add effect because they look like actual weasels so the audience will definetly know who it is. If we used puppets, it would be time consuming to make or expensive to buy and hard to control/choreograph as none of us know how to use them, but it would make the show look better and create a better experience for the audience as it's something new to look at other than people. For our weasel costumes we have them in all black, brown furry legwarmers to show a little element of the animal, and also ears and tails which we will either buy or make. If we made them it would be a lot cheaper but time consuming so if we're looking to stick to a time frame we should but them asap. We have the weasels in all black because it is an easy costume

change for th chorus members who have to be other animals such as

rabbits or mice.

Their costume for Rat is a grey suit with a shirt, sweater vest and

crevat. This gives him a clean cut look because it shows he cares about his appearance and it shows he is a higher class than mole but less than Toad. The gloves with holes in show he acts common like every other animal though as he doesn't live in a fancy home and is friends with all of the riverside animals. I like this costume because it's not too much and not too little detail to be able to see the character but not too over the top to distract attention from the main character. Our costume for Rat is very similar to this as we have him in a black suit with a red sweater vest with a black tie- we also have a pocket watch on show to add a quirk for the character to always check it as he likes to be proper and known so i assume he would be organized. I like both costumes because they both will suit the audience because they both show the personalities of the character, bit I think I would choose their costume only because it looks easier to dance in. But with our costume, Rat could take off the blazer

to dance and put it back on.

This is their Weasel costume. They have used rocker hair wigs to show they're wild and crazy. They have also used brown and dark colours to show the animals fur. Leather jackets are also used to show they are cool and rebels to the community, this adds to the character.

Our weasel costumes are less intricate than this because we need simple costumes as we have to be different animals as well. So we wear all black and add on little details to show what type of animal we are; for the weasels we are wearing ears, a tail and brown furry leg warmers as shown in their costume also. I like their costumes better because the character comes out more with the wigs but it would be unpractical for us to dance with them and also try to get them on and off quickly.
