Hudson Bay and Arctic Lowlands

Let's talk about one of the seven landform regions in Canada...

Introduction

Age

The lowlands were created at the end of the last ice age (Pleistocene epoch), when the heavy weight of the glaciers sunk into the earth, later retreating. This created the swamps in the Hudson Bay Lowlands. It was formed in the Paleozoic Era.

SIZE?

Hudson Bay- 320 000 km squared

The Arctic- 2.6 million km squared

Location! Location! Location!

The Hudson Bay Lowlands are located around the southwestern shore of the Hudson Bay and James Bay. The bodies of water surrounding the Hudson Bay are: to the north, the Foxe channel, the Fury and Hecla Strait and to the Atlantic Ocean, toward the east the Hudson Strait. The following provinces are a part of this region:

~Ontario

~Manitoba

~a small portion of Quebec

The Arctic Lowlands are found in...

~the Northern part of the Northwest Territories

~Nunavut

Quick Fun Fact!

Did you know an average of 215, 000 people visit every year?

Natural Resources

The harsh climate in the Arctic lowlands does not allow farming. Mining and fishing are found in the Hudson Bay lowlands. The Arctic lowlands also includes mining and has forestry as another economic activity. as a natural resource, It's mines contain lignite (poor quality of coal),oil, and natural gas. Hudson Bay lowlands have 20% of the Ontario's trees.

VEGETATION

Hudson Bay Lowlands:

~Productive forest cover is less than 25 percent.

~Made up of stunted tamarack and black spruce growing along river banks and other well-drained areas.

Tourism

The Northwest Territories much like Nunavut have beautifully preserved land and wildlife. People are drawn to visit the Northwest Territories because they have so many events that you can experience nature up close. Here a some events and attractions that you can experience in the Northwest Territories:

Brrrr!!!

The Hudson Bay Lowlands is always colder on the coast and warmer inland (with a much longer frost-free period). Throughout the region, temperatures are warm enough for ice to break up by late April or early May. Ice jams are common during this time and can cause water levels to rise. Winters are cold and moderately long and summers are cool and moderately short.

VEGETATION

Arctic Lowlands:

~fair amount of vegetation.

~Most plants in the Arctic Lowlands are low growing shrubs and weeds because of the climate and poor soil quality.

~Land is barren (no trees) due to the harsh climate.

~The rise of the waters are beneficial because it provides enough moisture for the development of lush and rich vegetation.
