The Nazi Euthanasia Program

Two Stages

- the first was compulsory sterilisation

- the second was euthanasia

Operation Reinhard death camps

- Original targets were handicapped children.

- At least 5,000 children were killed in paediatric hospitals after referral by local doctors.

- Belzec

- Sobibor

- Treblinka

Aktion-T4

'It is estimated that 1.7 million Jews were gassed to death in those camps in just two years- 1942 and 1943.'

Two killing methods used

- starvation

- lethal injection

-Is the second part of the 'euthanasia' program

- This time targeting handicapped adults

- It was introduced as an economic measure during the war - 'useless eaters.'

Early Experiments involved Polish mental patients being killed in different ways such as:

- Mass shootings

- Dynamite in pillboxes

- Gassing

Nazi rationale for killing all those children

- apparently humanitarian

- it contributed to medical science

Approximately 70,000 victims

How and why was the 'Euthanasia' program an important precursor to the Holocaust death camps?

As it was a way for them to experiment and see what works and what doesn't.

Through the Aktion -T4 and the whole of the euthanasia program it was found that gassing is more 'humane' (mostly just for the nazis) way of killing masses of people.

They therefore then went and used this information and ideas in the Final Solution.

Also the people in charge of the euthanasia program then went on to go and be in charge of the operation Reinhard death camps, as they were already 'trained' and can deal with the trauma better than new people.this made it easier for them to implement the euthanasia in the concentration camps.

They also used the same methods of killing such as deception, gassing and cremation.
