Also the surface area of a liquid is considerably larger than a solid because in a solid the particles are more compacted than in a liquid; where the particles are more spread out, therefore they take up much more space.

How does an Ice cube melt?

What Particles in a liquid are like

Liquids have a medium density (mass per unit of volume) because there is more space between the particles. Also particles in a liquid are not compressible because the particles in a liquids are still compacted unlike gases they have a wider amount of space to be easily compressible.

Particles in a Solid

Ice Cube

The particles in a solid ice cube are held by strong forces called bonds. In a solid ice cube all the particles are closely compact, however they can vibrate but still keep a fixed shape. This stops the solid flowing.

How solids change into liquid

When a solid is heated it turns into a liquid this mean that it can produce more energy and that the particles/molecules are pulling of each other to have a weak bond to move past each other.

Different

Particle properties in a solid and a liquid

While the particles in a liquid can move past each other the particles in a solid cannot because solids have a tighter bond held together by strong tight forces while the particle in a liquid have weaker bonds so that the particles can move easily.

Also a liquid has more heat included this means that the particles in a liquid have more energy included, on the other hand particles in a solid less heat and less energy.

Liquid particles are touching but they are further apart than solid particles. They also dont have a fixed shape and the particles in a liquid move by sliding past each other. The ice cube that was solid turned into liquid because the air temperature was warmer than the the solid particles.

How Liquids turns into

gas

When a liquid is heated, the particles are given more energy. They start to move faster and further apart. At a certain temperature, the particles break free of one another and the liquid turns to gas. This is the boiling point. The boiling point of a substance is always the same; it does not vary.

Particles in a Gas

Particles in a gas are moving in all directions and always bumping into each other. The particles in a gas are able to move around randomly because there are no bonds between them. Therefore, a gas does not have a fixed volume or shape. When we compress a gas, the particles are moved closer together. The more the gas is squashed, the closer the particles will get
