General Information
- from South American, relative of the camel
- domestic animals used by the peoples of the Andes Mountains
- raised as pack animals, meat, fiber, dairy products, and as pets
- average: 5.5 - 6 feet; 280-450 pounds
- very sociable and intelligent
- Good pets!!!
- predictable low-key temperament, intelligence and ease of maintenance
- Require: Space, social, supplies, and a vet who understands llamas

Natural Habitat
- Andes Mountains
- Altitudes between 7,500 to 13,100 feet above sea level
- preferring temperate and mountainous areas
Llamas as guards...
Health Concerns
- bonds closely with its new charges and is instinctively very effective in preventing predation
- more efficient if only one male is guarding
- not scare away the visitors/tourists
- "will attack anything that looks like a dog"
- susceptible to many of the same diseases and parasites as cattle and sheep
- enterotoxemia, tuberculosis, Johne's disease, anthrax, malignant edema and tetanus
