Llama

General Information

  • from South American, relative of the camel
  • domestic animals used by the peoples of the Andes Mountains
  • raised as pack animals, meat, fiber, dairy products, and as pets
  • average: 5.5 - 6 feet; 280-450 pounds
  • very sociable and intelligent
  • Good pets!!!
  • predictable low-key temperament, intelligence and ease of maintenance
  • Require: Space, social, supplies, and a vet who understands llamas

Natural Habitat

  • Andes Mountains
  • Altitudes between 7,500 to 13,100 feet above sea level
  • preferring temperate and mountainous areas

Llamas as guards...

Health Concerns

  • bonds closely with its new charges and is instinctively very effective in preventing predation
  • more efficient if only one male is guarding
  • not scare away the visitors/tourists
  • "will attack anything that looks like a dog"
  • susceptible to many of the same diseases and parasites as cattle and sheep
  • enterotoxemia, tuberculosis, Johne's disease, anthrax, malignant edema and tetanus
  • parasites
