The Importance of The Olm

Possible Extinction

The Olm species is important to it's ecosystem and humans around it. The Olm controls populations of fish, crab, and aquatic insects. The species helps us understand more about evolution. It also is a big economic factor because it is a tourist attraction.

If the Olm were to go extinct, communities of insects, snails, and crabs would over-populate and become significant pests. Scientific research to learn more about evolution could not be done. It would could cause an economic crash because the species is a national treasure and tourist attraction.

The Threatened Olm!!

Adaptations

The Olm has many fascinating adaptations and functions. They have developed a unique sense of scent and hearing for finding their prey. The Olm also developed gills and 4 limbs to swiftly move through the water and to have a functional respiratory system. The Olm also developed an elongated head to help with proper body and organ functions.

The Olm is highly susceptible to pollution. Tourism has changed the forested land above the subterranean systems. As a result of tourism and economic changes, the water has been contaminated and has become unsafe for the Olm species. The Olm species is also illegally being captured as pets in countries where the species is being protected.

Proteus

Genus-

Habitat, Biome, and Range

Species- Proteus anguinus

Habitat: Intense darkness, and subterranean waters. Inhabits underground fresh and well-oxygenated water systems, and caves where the water temperature is cool (between 6ºC and 12ºC).

Range: Parts of Boznia, Herzegovina, and Southern Croatia, France, Italy, and Slovenia.

Aquatic Biomes: Rivers, ponds, lakes, and streams.

The Olm, or the Proteus anguinus is an amphibian and is Europe's only cave adapted vertebrate. The Olm likes subterranean waters. It hunts in extreme darkness, and has a great sense of smell, taste, and hearing. They are pale and blind. They are an entirely aquatic species and have been evolving for millions of years, they are carnivores and have no known predators.
