...so go and be creative

Film

Even a film based on a true story still requires interpretation on the part of writers, directors and actors. There is a selection on what is shown and careful thought given to how it is shown (cinematography).

...sculpture

Film is a complex medium and incorporates elements of many of the arts;

  • Writing
  • Cinematography
  • Acting/Performing
  • Music

Directors work very hard to set the 'mood' in a film they must consider;

  • Music
  • Lighting
  • Camera Angles

All of these things play a part in how the message of a film is conveyed.

Sculpture can be made from many things some traditional ones are;

  • Stone
  • Metal
  • Wood
  • Ceramic (Clay)
  • Plaster

What else could you use?

Would it have to be a hard/permanent material?

Does the artist portray Ned Kelly as a strong character? Why?

How big do you think this is?

Is the size relevant?

...Drawing

Ned Kelly in Music

Much like painting drawing is considered a very traditional approach to a topic and it requires the same consideration in terms of what to show and how.

The Kelly story has been covered extensively in song. A few artists you might know of include;

  • Paul Kelly
  • Midnight Oil
  • Johnny Cash

Many of the songs about Ned Kelly will share with us pieces of the story. The writer/performer has in mind what they want you to think about or feel when listening.

A person producing an artwork about Kelly would need to research this topic in depth, and make a choice about how to express or interpret what their understanding of Ned Kelly is.

A big part of this is choosing an appropriate type of creative response.

You can choose to express your ideas through any of the Arts.

Creative Response

...so many options

Don't forget these other mediums that could potentially be used for your Individual Project;

  • Print making
  • Creative writing
  • Performance art
  • Poetry
  • Photography
  • Animation

So how do you choose?

Ned Kelly

Lets take for example Ned Kelly. This is a topic that has been explored by artists and responded to in many ways.

For your Individual Project you will produce a creative response that;

  • Effectively communicates your chosen topic
  • Is informed by research
  • Makes clear and appropriate links with your topic
  • Shows evidence of skill development

A good Creative Response will need to;

  • Communicate effectively with your audience

  • Be Informed - Show your understanding of your topic & your medium

Your Task

The Individual Project gives you the opportunity to make choices;

What is my topic?

What is the message/idea I want to share about my topic?

What/How are you going to create to effectively communicate that?

Melbourne artist Michael Jenkins

uses recycled timber as the canvas for his work "Ned".

  • Does a painting have to be on a canvas?
  • Does it even have to be on something that is flat?

Sidney Nolan

National Gallery of Australia, Canberra

Gift of Sunday Reed 1977

Why choose that part of the story?

What is the artist trying to say about authority?

Pen & Ink drawing

credited to Norman Lindsay

This is a 'snapshot' that through the choice of pen and ink adds an element of mood.

How has the artist used the viewing angle (composition) to make us feel about Kelly?

Monty Wedd's Ned Kelly comic strip from the 1970's

Comic books are an art form and require the ability to tell a story through a series of images. Modern comics are produced digitally and require drawing, writing, and photoshop skills to produce.

Ned Kelly 2003

- Partially filmed in Clunes!

Does this song portray Kelly as a Victim?

Does the performer want us to sympathise?

...Painting

Probably one of the first things that comes to mind when talking about the Arts. It is only one branch of the 'Visual Arts'.

A painter has to make a choice about;

  • What to show and how?
  • What is the message?

Creative Thinking

Creativity is not something that only artists have. It is a flexible approach to problem solving. It is used by people everyday and in many ways.

Creativity is;

  • Being able to make links between information
  • Perceiving things in new ways
  • It involves trial and error
