James Gatz, a poor 17 year old fisherman working on the shores of Lake Superior, rows out to a yacht owned by a Mr. Dan Cody in order to warn the captain and crew about a storm. Gatz is invited on board and questioned; he tells Mr. Cody that his name is Jay Gatsby.
Jay Gatsby, now an army officer stationed in Louisville, Kentucky, meets Daisy and falls in love with her. They promise fidelity to one another before he leaves for Europe. Shortly after he ships off, however, Tom Buchanan enters the picture-- a handsome aristocrat from an influential family. He proposes to Daisy and she accepts.
Gatsby returns from the war and realizes he has lost his love. He believes that the only way to win her back is to amass a wealth to match Tom's. Lacking an education, Gatsby enters into organized crime (particularly bootlegged alcohol) and makes millions.
Nick Carraway, Daisy's cousin, has moved to Long Island in order to make his fortune on the bond market. He is reunited with the Buchanans, meets Jordan, and begins to hear rumors about the mysterious Jay Gatsby.
Nick accompanies Tom into the city to meet his mistress, Myrtle Wilson. They head to Tom's condo for drinks, everyone gets drunk, and Tom slaps Myrtle in the face.
Nick attends one of Jay Gatsby's parties with Jordan Baker. He spends most of the evening observing the raucous guests before he incidentally meets Gatsby himself. Gatsby invites him to spends some time together the following day.
Nick goes out to lunch in the city with Gatsby and Meyer Wolfshiem. He learns a little bit of about the shadier side to Gatsby's business dealings and learns that Wolfshiem was behind the rigging of the 1919 World Series. Later in the chapter Gatsby sets up his secret rendezvous with Daisy at Nick's bungalow.
Jay and Daisy have their rendezvous at Nick's house. Their reunion is a romantic one, ending at Gatsby's mansion rather than Nick's bungalow.
Several weeks go by, during which Jay and Daisy continue to meet in private. Tom, becoming suspicious, decides to accompany Daisy to the next party at Jay's mansion. They spend the entire evening at the party and leave in an argument because Tom insists that Jay must be a criminal.
Nick, Jay, Jordan, Daisy, and Tom meet at the Buchanan's for lunch. It becomes apparent to Tom that Daisy is involved with Jay over their meal. Daisy proposes everyone take a trip into the city, which they agree to. Once there, however, Daisy and Jay's secrect comes out into the open and an argument erupts. Everyone leaves for Long Island again in separate vehicles and Daisy accidentally kills Myrtle Wilson in a hit and run accident.
