The assignment birthmother symbolizes dishonor. Jonas's mother in The Giver states,"There's very little honor in that Assignment." Yet if the community did not have birthmothers then the population would not grow.
Stirring pills symbolize maturity and growth. One usually gets stirrings when they are an Eleven or Twelve. A stirring is a pleasant dream that makes you have the feeling of wanting. This pill affects Jonas and the community by not allowing them to have pleasant dreams. Jonas enjoys the happy dreams and decides to throw away the pill.
Comfort Objects represent youth and comfort. You receive a comfort object when you are a new child. Jonas's mother says,"When you're an Eight your comfort object will be taken away and recycled to the younger children." If the community did not have comfort objects I'm sure that younger children would have a difficult time when they sleep.
Bicycles represent maturity and independence. Bicycles are the main source of transportation as shown towards the end of the book. You ride in the back of your mom's or dad's bicycle until you are a Nine. The Giver says,"Jonas watched the new Nines gravitate toward their waiting bicycles, each one admiring his or her name tag". The Nines are super excited when they get their bikes. Once you have a bicycle you get to choose where you go.
The ceremonies represent progression and completion. The ceremonies are for each age group up to Twelve. If the community did not have the ceremonies then no one would know their Assignments and they would not progress.
