Chillingworth has moved in with Dimmesdale to provide him with around-the-clock care for his heart problem. Chillingworth is trying to get Dimmesdale to reveal his sins in hopes of him confessing to being the father of Pearl. One night while Dimmesdale is asleep Chillingworth discovers an item on his chest.
In this chapter, Chillingworth tries to find the root of the heart problem that Dimmesdale has. He finds plants in the woods to make medice out of. Dimmesdale questions some of the plants Chillingworth brings back. Dimmesdale is weary of trusting anyone. The two men enter an awkward conversation about sin. Pearl and Hester are in the cemetary while this conversation is going on. Pearl sees the men and tells her mother "The Black Man" (refering to Chillingworth) has already captured the minster and must not capture them.
