Evaluation Point 2

Katerina-Female Lead

Stereotypes for women in film:

Damsel in distress

Weak

Fragile

Submissive

Quiet

Clumsy

The intimidating, creepy character

In addition to the above, casting a woman as the lead is not commonly found in films. Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film at San Diego State University found that females comprised 12% of protagonists in the top-grossing films of 2014; this figure clearly shows the gap in film market for films with lead female protagonists.

Masculinity and how we represented it in social roles

Stanislav:

How did we subvert the stereotype in our representation of Katerina?

Katerina herself is near to the complete opposite of the weak, damsel role a female usually fills.

Katie and I ensured that Shaun was represented to exactly fit his 'creepy man' social role. He wore a black hoodie with black trousers; he was tall and lean, he bent over when he walked and he slowly trailed behind Katerina.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Katerina's character:

Strong individual

Intimidating

Aggressive looking

Dark

Controlled and efficient

Our aim for the character of Stanislav was to follow the stereotypical 'mafia lead man' role. This involved creating a character who's posture, movements, expression and general on screen characteristics displayed a brutal, intimidating man. Out of the two leads, Stanislav is the experienced, knowledgeable figure so this had to be conveyed on screen.

How did being a spy effect Katerina's social role?

Katerina's characters was also crafted to fit with the stereotypical spy social role. In order to successfully convince the audience that she was a spy, Katie and I had to alter her personality and approach to match that of a stereotypical spy/ secret agent.

As you can see the 'typical feminine social role' was successfully countered with the formation of Katerina's character; much like Katniss in Hunger games, Amy Dunne in Gone girl and Lisbeth Salander in Girl with the Dragon tattoo ( to name a few similiar examples).

What are the social roles associated with Russian characters and how we represented them in our opening

Why did we decide to follow these ideas with Shaun's character?

We planned for both Stanislav and Shaun to be represented following their stereotypical social roles for the same reason. If they both are common and well-known types of characters then the audience will be able to identify them quicker.

Shaun, in particular, followed a more psychotic route in order to increase the thriller character base that Katie and I were trying to build. By the inclusion of his typical 'creepy character' we unlocked more codes and conventions into our chosen genre.

How does Stanislav represent his social role and how was this challenged?

Why did we represent Stanislav's social role to follow his stereotype?

Stanislav is only present in one scene: the cafe scene. He sits with his arms crossed, intensely staring at every member of the public and the surrounding environment- almost assessing the situation.

He wears formal, clean clothes that indicate he means business.

Every movement he makes it stiff and almost pre-planned.

To manually help the audience identify Stanislav as an intimidating and main character. By following his character's stereotype (unlike what we did with Katerina) we were able to establish his part in the story and subconsciously draw the audiences' attention to him when he appeared on the screen.

Challenged: Stanislav is never actually seen speaking and this subverts the stereotype of an outspoken, dominant character.

Stereotype:

Damsel in distress

Weak

Fragile

Submissive

Quiet

Clumsy

Smart attire, smoothness of motions, the ability to blend in, use of dull coloured clothing, composed personality and mysterious body language were all attributes that Katie and I thought would help Katerina suit her spy role.

Some stereotypes:

Vicious

Violent

Dark

Emotionless

Cold-hearted

We had limited time to convincingly portray the Russian background to both Katerina and Stanislav, but we did include a voice over that briefly touched upon the brutal nature of Katerina; suggesting that she conforms some Russian stereotypes.

We also directed our actor and actress to act emotionless and 'stone cold' for their roles, this was to portray the russian spy brutality.
