In this photograph, Albert Einstein is giving a lecture about his theory of relativity to black students at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. He traveled to the university in 1946 to teach at the first school in America to grant college degrees to black students during the desegregation.
In his powerful speech, Einstein stated that racism is “a disease of white people.” Additionally he said: “I do not intend to be quiet about it.” Living in Europe in the 1940s and a member of the Jewish community, Einstein understood firsthand the horrors of racism.
Albert Einstein and Charlie Chaplin met in January of 1931 at the City of Lights premiere, as seen in this photograph. Einstein had once said that Chaplin was the only celebrity he wanted to meet someday.
It turns out that they were mutual fans as once Einstein said to Chaplin, “What I most admire about your art, is your universality. You don’t say a word, yet the world understands you!” Chaplin responded saying: “It’s true, but your fame is even greater: the world admires you, when nobody understands what you say.”
