Lesson 1 - What causes crime?

What is crime?

Some key terms to get you started.

Crime: an act that is against the law. It also implies some punishment or at least an action that prevents recidivism.

Recidivism: the term used when someone repeats a crime or behaviour for which they have been punished.

Anti-social behaviour: may not be a crime but is actions that citizens dislike and which could become a crime.

Defining crime

Society decides what is a crime in their particular society. Some actions may be a crime in all countries but most are socially constructed.

This means that it is made up by that society and not agreed by everyone all of the time.

Strange correlational research about the causes of crime.

What causes crime?

What about nurture?

Some other theories believe that being deprived of a parents love as an infant can lead to juvenile delinquency and worse when older.

Biologically = born with?

This is wrong. Crime can be rooted in biology without someone being born that way. It may be that an accident or head injury can affect someone's biology and their behaviour.

Nature vs Nurture

Crimes are often split into the nature nurture debate. This means there is a lot of debate over whether personality, genes, hormones or brain structure affect whether you are likely to commit a crime.
