Independent vs. Dependent Variables

A variable in an equation that may have its value freely chosen without considering values of any other variable

Examples: X & Output

Get out your brains!!

A variable that depends on one or more other variables.

Get out your phones, it's time to play Kahoot and don't put in nicknames! Put in your real name! The last people on the score board will receive free candy!

Examples: Y & Input

Get out the notes sheet and fill in the blanks!

quick question!

YOUR TURN!

The independent variable is often designated by x. The dependent variable is often designated by y.

Josie is selling lemonade. The amount of money she earns depends on how many cups of lemonade she sells.

Variables are used in Science. The independent variable is the variable that is manipulated by the researcher during an experiment. In this case, the independent variable is the vitamin substance that is being given to the plant. This is controlled by the experimenting scientist.

r = the number of rolls of wrapping paper

g = the number of gifts

s = the amount of strawberries Lacey picks

j = the number of jars Lacey will be able to fill with jam

fREE cANDY!

We say y is a function of x. This means y depends on or is determined by x.

m = the amount of money Josie earns

c = the number of cups of lemonade Josie sells

Which of the variables is independent and which is dependent?

First 3 people to raise their hand, will receive a piece of candy!

b = the amount of bread Anita has

s = the number of sandwiches Anita can make

a = the number of apples harvested each day

f = the number of apple pickers hired

Which of the variables is independent and which is dependent?

A small apple orchard hires fruit pickers to harvest their crop. The number of apples harvested each day depends on the number of fruit pickers hired.

Miki is wrapping gifts to earn money for camp. She calculates the amount of wrapping paper she needs based on the number of gifts.

Anita is making sandwiches for a family picnic. The amount of bread she has determines how many sandwiches she can make.

Lacey is picking strawberries to make into strawberry jam. The more strawberries she picks, the more jars she will be able to fill with jam.
