Avoid cliches. Cliches are phrases that people use all the time.

"Every cloud has a silver lining" might be a metaphor for how you benefited from a challenge you faced, but it is one I have heard before.

You might include figurative language to describe your goal, your feelings about the topic of this paper, or the experiences that have influenced your goals.

A metaphor is comparing two things

without using the words like or as.

Figurative Language

A simile is when you compare two things that are not the same using like or as!

One of the requirements for the Goals essay is to include figurative language in your paper. The natural place to do this is in the introduction. Today, we will have a refresher on different examples of figurative language.

The verse "Footprints dressed in red" and "the wind whispers Mary" are great examples of personification. .

The verse "I love you like a love song" is a simile because it is comparing her love for someone to a love song. She used figurative language to describe her love for someone.

The verse "I'd catch a grenade for you/ throw my hands on a blade for you/ I'd jump in front of a train for you"is an example of hyperbole. He uses hyperbole to express his feeling to a girl who cheated on him.

The verse "My heart's a stereo" is comparing his heart to a stereo. This song also uses an extended metaphor to compare relationships to music records.
