Bilingual Books and Labels

Supporting Biliteracy Awareness

As you can see the options are in Spanish. Teachers who only speak English have the option to translate this page to assign books or a focus.

Once in the app ELL students who are focusing on biliteracy can choose the Espanol tab to find books in Spanish.

Tumblebooks is a wonderful option for ELL students. It allows teachers to choose books that keep the ELL student focused on the same standards the rest of the class is working on, but offers it in a way that they can understand. Because it also offers so many books in English and Spanish students can also focus on building vocabulary.

As suggested on page 111 of our strategies book, many of the books are are available in Spanish and English to provide a bilingual component. (Herrell & Johnson, 2019)

From the BCPS digital content students

would click on the Tumblebooks app

We know from our reading that teaching that "initial reading instruction in the student's home language contributes positively to that student's ability to attain literacy in a second language" (Sousa, 2011)

Tumblebooks only offers English and Spanish so it is only a good choice for ELL students whose first language is Spanish.

Our strategy book discusses this strategy starting on page 111 (Herrell & Jordan 2019)
