About The Basin

  • It's the third largest river basin in NC
  • It has 2,521 miles of streams and rivers
  • There are 18 counties within the Basin
  • 472,629 people live in the basin as of 2010

Environmental Threats

  • Algae Blooms
  • Farm/Pesticide and Timber Operation Runoff
  • Municipal treatment plants were discharging wastewater into rivers and streams.
  • These contribute to excessive plant growth and low levels of dissolved oxygen in the water.
  • Located in the Piedmont region of NC
  • Spans from Granville County to Hyde County
