Miss Havisham is a character in Charles Dickens' 1861 novel 'Great Expectations'.
She is in her mid-fifties. She had come from a wealthy family, and was warned that her fiance was only interested in her money, but she was too in love to listen.
Decades previously, on the morning of her wedding day, Miss Havisham received a note from her fiance telling her he would not be marrying her.
She was humiliated and heartbroken, and from that moment vowed never to take off her wedding dress. She leads a strange and damaged life.
The novel has been adapted for film and TV. The following clip shows how Miss Havisham is depicted on screen.
