I'm Here by Spike Jonze

Form and Style

''I'm Here'' begins with a tracking shot of a bus ride and introduces the main character with frequent close ups, there are also wide shots of other robots who have been involved in an accident - or are working as manual laborers. In this scene, the lighting is very natural and soft. Therefore the lighting changes as the film goes on signifying different scenarios and events that occur. The fact the lighting throughout changes to become quite dark and artificial, could perhaps happen to show the change in attitude of different characters and their change from being innocent to falling in love and attending a grunge concert where strobe lighting is used to convey atmosphere. There are often close ups on subjects and does not have many long shots, the film is mostly shot with a shallow depth of field.

Purpose

The short film ''I'm Here'' by Spike Jonze is primarily a film with a purpose to entertain, however, it also advertises and promotes Absolute Vodka - which is the company that sponsored and produced the short film. As well as this, the film has several messages within the narrative that runs throughout.

Meaning and Content

even though the film is mostly for entertainments purposes, there is three main messages that run throughout the plot; to drink responsibly - this is shows through a small character who appears to be intoxicated and confused when she is in a scene this therefore gives a clear message that drinking too much can damage many things in your body. Love - the message of love is conveyed through through the main two characters a robot whom has fallen in love and when she becomes damaged he is that infatuated with her that he starts to dissemble himself in order to save her - this specific scene contains warm lighting and a gentle smile on both of their faces therefore setting the overall atmosphere. Finally, anti-discrimination - this is subtly worked into the plot through speech and imagery. we first see a robot that has been damaged when hit by a car but the human public are more interested in the damage on the car as opposed to the robot. It is then shown again when a woman is at a bus stop and sees a robot driving a car and shouts that she is not allowed to drive that car - therefore reinforcing the racial discrimination theme, however, in this case, the robots are considered the less dominant ones. Moreover, this attitude is disaproved when we see robots doing everyday human activities throughout the film - therefore disapproving the theme of a discriminating attitude.

Genre

Meaning

This film is a romantic tragedy, however, it does break many general conventions that we associate with romance and tragedy. Firstly, the lovers in the film are both robots which are typically portrayed as being cold, emotionless machines, when in fact they are shown to have emotions and feelings just like humans. Secondly, usually in a tragedy someone dies, but, in this, because they are robots, they are able to sacrifice parts of himself for her without having to die. Untimately this film breaks a deal of generic conventions, to tell an unusual, touching love story, with an element of tragedy as well as sacrifice.

the undeniable meaning of the film is purely to entertain, as well as to convey the message that love is about sacrifice. And that to contain true love, any sacrifice will be worth it. However, the film also conveys messages of responsible drinking and anti-discrimination. As well as advertise Absolut Vodka through the product placement and by producing and sponsoring the film.
