Video

While Kush grew wealthy from trade, its army grew stronger. Egypt's ruler feared that Kush would grow even more powerful and could even attack Egypt. Then Egypt took control of Kush to prevent this from happening. Around 850 B.C. Kush regained its strength and conquered Egypt. When Kush lost control of Egypt, the people of Kush devoted themselves to increasing agriculture and trade, hoping to make their country rich again. Ancient Kush intro

Along the Nile river, with nice fertile land was an empire called Kush empire. The start of the Kushites great economy started after the Assyrians defeated the Kush in a war using iron weapons. Kush had a great economic system. Kush's capital, Meroe, had a large trade network. That trade network bought them resources that they had. Trading was the biggest thing in Kush. The Kush then became more advanced and started to trade with southwest Asia, the Mediterranean.

Crops

The Kushites also traded crops such as wheat, barley, millet, and other fruits and vegetables. The reason they could produce these crops was because the Kushites relied on the Nile. This river would flood causing the soil around the river to gain more nutrients, and let the Kushites grow many crops in one season, also known as double cropping on the fertile land. The Nile river also played another key role in the Kushites empire, the Nile river was used as a transportation or a trade route for the Kushites.

Trading

Back then Meroe became the center of a large trade network. The Kushites sent goods down the Nile to Egypt. From there , Egyptian and Greek merchants carried goods to ports on the Mediterranean and Red seas and to southern Africa. The goods may even have reached India and China. The Kush exports include gold, pottery, iron tools, slaves, and ivory. Kushite merchants also exported leopard skins, ostrich feathers, and elephants. In return the Kushites received imports like fine jewelry and luxury items from Egypt, Asia and lands around the Mediterranean Sea.
