The Cold War caused the nations to create the group, NATO to fight against communism. Stands for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. This group is still in effect today and is vital to U.S. security. It is a mechanism used to confront security threats and protect democracy, human rights, and rule of law. It also allows countries to work together to respond to threats to these values in places like Afghanistan.

Korean War
When Korea was divided after World War II, the southern half was given to the American military to control and the northern half was given to the Soviet military. This resulted in a conflict between the two halves, with the Soviets supporting the North and the Americans supporting the South. Although it was a bad war, Americans felt less passionate about it then they did about World War II.
Russia occupied Berlin and would not allow any food or supplies to go to the people so the U.S. flew in 4700 tons of daily necessities like food and fuel. This showed the Soviet Union that they probably would not win a battle against them in Berlin, so they backed down therefore this conflict was avoided.

After the cold war foreign policy changed because the United States was bent on controlling communism and disallowing it to spread to other countries. This lead to involvement in the Korean and Vietnam wars and also many alliances with anti-communism countries.
Americans were afraid of the Russians because they were communists and were apparently successful. This made Americans afraid that people would become communists. This led to people persecuting their peers for being communists, and destroyed many people's (especially in Hollywood) careers.
