what did Laban do?

who is Laban?

he developed a dance notation which is used to present space-harmony with its scales and the theory of effort.

applying LMA

the study of LMA

The boy is running lightly on his feet, pivots sharply and then suddenly slashes his arms out and stomps heavily onto his right foot. He then runs lightly again. The shape of his body is hunched over with his arms bent at the elbows and hands are placed under the chin making claw-like figures with his hands. The space he takes up is the whole stage, as he runs around.

Rudolf von Laban:

  • dancer
  • choreographer
  • painter
  • movement researcher

He studied:

  • music
  • architecture
  • geometry
  • amongst others

each movement can be described through:

  • body
  • effort
  • space
  • shape
  • relationship
  • phrasing

phrasing

Phrasing is the way we use the four aspects of movement (weight, flow, space and time) and how they are brought together to make one consistent movement.

relationship

Relationship deals with the aspect of how people, in the everyday life, react towards each other. It deals with the characteristics of relationships:

  • Of people
  • Of different body parts to one another
  • Of the relationship of objects and people.

shape

This is based on the natural breathing. The shape of the human body changes in relation to its surroundings.

space

The relationship between the person and their surroundings. Laban creates space using the kinesphere. His goal is to create a better understanding of the use of space and three-dimensional movement.

effort

Effort can be discussed using:

  • Weight
  • Flow
  • Space
  • Time

body

By noticing the different body parts, separately, you notice their relationship to each other which then helps recognize the structure and organization of the body.
