Dietary Energy Supplies (DES) showed from 1964-66 a progressive increase until 1989-91. From this moment onwards, the unfavourable economic conditions that Cuba has had to face lead the country to an abrupt decline in food availability in 1992-95. In 1996-98 starts a gradual improvement although without reaching the levels observed in the eighties. There is no information on food consumption; but a first food consumption survey conducted in 2001 is soon expected to provide data. Traditionally, Cubans eat rice, beans, chicken meat or pig meat, bananas, yuca, sugar and coffee. In the last years, there is a tendency towards an increased consumption of fruits and vegetables as well as of sugar and fats.

Cuba, with a population of a little over 11 million people, imports about 80% of its domestic food requirements. A number of measures are being taken to increase food production, chief among which is the allocation of fallow land to private individuals and groups, as well as the reduction of the amount of land devoted to sugar cane cultivation, but the country’s vulnerability to hurricanes and droughts, coupled with the increase in global food prices and the financial crisis, makes the path to national food security difficult.

The eastern region of Cuba – encompassing the provinces of Guantánamo, Granma, Santiago de Cuba, Las Tunas, Holguín, and Camagüey — is the most vulnerable to food insecurity.

In Africa 72% of the people living in African cities live in slums. Every night 1 out of every 8 children in the U.S. goes to bed hungry. 852 million people in the world are suffering from chronic or acute malnourishment.

In South Asia and Africa almost half of all kids under the age of 5 go to bed hungry.

If you're suffering from hunger you're malnourished. Malnourished means your body's not getting the right vitamins and nutrients it needs to keep you strong and healthy.

Cuba

There is practically no malnourishment anymore, but child mortality remains significant at about 20 per 1000. Today, unfortunately, the latest figures date is 2012, with fairly high figures. There is a major theoretical chance that this problem is far greater today.

Figures from WHO shows that 71% have good access to clean water (2000), 97% access to good sanitation (2006). Contrary to many countries, in Libya there are no differences in access between countryside and towns.

UNICEF is the main provider of ready-to-use therapeutic food in DR Congo. Infant and young child feeding practices are also being promoted through health centers, religious groups, community workers and local associations. An early warning system has also been set up to regularly collect data on child nutrition and household food security through a network of 110 sites in Katanga and Kasai Oriental provinces.

Only 37 percent of children in DR Congo are exclusively breastfed, and 18 per cent suffer frequent diarrhea.

Malaria and diarrheal diseases – major causes of child death in DR Congo – also contribute to malnutrition, which in turn leaves children vulnerable to opportunistic diseases. Insufficient quality and quantity of food, poor infant feeding practices and preventable diseases together form a vicious.

Kenya

Kenya has a approximate population of 32 million, 56% of that population live below the poverty line. The child mortality rate is very high at 115 per 1000 live births and infant mortality 77 per1000 .Malnutrition affects a large proportion of the children less than 5 years of age. 20% are underweight (low weight-for-age). The large number of young children suffering from hunger and malnutrition in the villages presents an important challenge that must be addressed urgently. The health, mental and physical development, and even the survival of many children is at stake. The initial focus of this project is to identify all of the most seriously affected children in the catchment area of 75 villages and provides them with nutritious food supplements, and monitor their growth to insure that they are gaining weight adequately. The most vulnerable children, who are most likely to die from complications if not treated, are the children with acute malnutrition (“wasting”) who are less than 2 years of age

What is UNICEF?

UNICEF was created by the United Nations General Assembly on December 11, 1946, to provide emergency food and healthcare to children in countries that had been devastated by World War II. In 1954, UNICEF became a permanent part of the United Nations System and its name was shortened from the original United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund but it has continued to be known by the popular acronym.

Italy on the other hand is what we call a developing country. Although as in every other country there is lower class or individuals who go through proverty. Italy looks foward in helping because as a developed country we help those in need of a helping hand. Our UNICEF committee was founded in 1974, and has since created the very successful Pigotta doll. The Pigotta is a well known doll that was created to vaccinate the children, when you adopt an doll (costs 20 Euros) one child in need will receive a kit containing a vaccine, a dose of vitamin A, an obstetrics kit for safe child birth, antibiotic and a mosquito net. UNICEF has a very strong presence in the Italian community and you can volunteer, donate and buy products by UNICEF that donate aid to children in need.

Congo

Recently, World Vision's emergency team was able to deliver therapeutic food for children at the clinic the nutrition center provides intensive care to young children suffering from severe malnutrition. Most of the children coming for assistance have been displaced from their homes, some multiple times.Apart from treatment of malnutrition, World Vision also trains local health workers and parents on prevention of malnutrition and disease. With support from the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization and UNICEF, parents are also receiving tools and seeds to help the growth of nutritional crops.Meanwhile, World Vision and UNICEF is warning that the number of malnourished children will continue to rise if all warring factions and the international community do not commit to finding a peaceful solution the crisis.

Kenya

The Kenyan Government has declared a state of emergency and is appealing for food and other aid. UNICEF supplementary feeding programs alongside basic food distribution have helped to reduce some child deaths, but diseases such as measles and diarrhea are a constant threat. UNICEF is scaling up its efforts to help the government prevent and manage these and other illnesses – and targeted feeding programs will also increase. 150,000 children will be provided with long-lasting, insecticide-treated mosquito nets, along with anti-malarial treatment for 40,000 adults and 100,000 children. Around 8 million dollars is needed for emergency health care and nutrition, but there’s likely to be a shortfall of more than $3.5 million. As the drought continues and temperatures rise, so does the scale of this crisis. Without urgent aid it will claim the lives of many more.

Kenya

The number of children suffering from malnutrition in Kenya has increased in the last decade. A global report released by Save the Children says millions of Kenyan children suffer from chronic malnutrition. Poverty is cited as one of the main underlying causes of malnutrition, not because there is no nutritious food available, but because parents and guardians cannot afford to buy it.
