Genetics

  • Insulin dependent
  • The body cannot produce insulin
  • The body's immune system attacked beta cells in pancreas as foreign cells, leaving the body without insulin as the key for the glucose into cells

Cause

What is Insulin?

The definite cause of type 1 diabetes is unknown, though there is research to suggest possible correlations

Insulin is a hormone produced in the pancreas, by beta cells, that turn sugars into energy for the cells in the body

Contributing Factor

Obesity (adults and children)

Immune system attack of pancreas (aka, Autoimmune disease)

Physical Inactivity

Signs and Symptoms

Type 1

Related Signs and Symptoms

  • Bed wetting for children who don't generally wet the bed
  • Vaginal yeast infection, in women

Type 2 Diabetes

  • Fatigue
  • Increased thirst
  • Increased urination
  • Extreme hunger
  • Weight loss
  • Blurred vision
  • Irritability or mood swings

Family History of Diabetes

Type 2

  • Non-insulin dependent
  • The beta cells being to fatigue, producing less insulin
  • The body is resisting to the insulin that is produced
  • Formerly known as "adult onset"

Over 40 years old
