The 1990s were a dark time for comics. Marvel went bankrupt, while publishing many bad events like Onslaught and Heroes Reborn. DC published Death of Superman and Knightfall, two popular events still known today.
Timely comics had published mainly monster stories throughout the 50s. However, by the 60s, two people at Timely decided to foray into the arena of superheroes. These people were Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. They published Fantastic Four #1 in 1961. Kirby and Lee published many comics, including Daredevil, X-Men, and Avengers. Meanwhile, DC rebooted its line with new characters in old mantles.

Near the end of the 30s, Detective Comics(DC) began to revolutionize the comics industry forever. By 1939, they were publishing Batman and Superman comics, starting a tradition that has endured ever since. Timely comics got into the business with Marvel Comics #1, introducing Namor the Sub Mariner and the Human Torch-Jim Hammond.
The 70s and 80s were uneventful besides two major events for each company. Marvels large event was Secret Wars, while DC had Crisis on Infinite Earths.
In the 2000s, comics made a comeback. Driven by the succes of comic movies, the X-Men were the most popular commodity of Marvel. Two major events were Avengers Dissassembled and House of M. DC also had a big decade, with Infinite Crisis and many changes to their base characters. Beginning in the 2010s, Marvel and DC have been making a push for diversity with new characters in old mantles. Incidentally, both companied have undergone a reboot. The New 52 served this purpose for DC, and Marvel had Secret Wars.
